His concern for making his community a better place to live led him to receive the Republican parties nomination and run for state representative in 1990. Barton has served on various community comities including the Olmos Park Infrastructure Task Force. He has also served as Republican Party precinct chairman for his neighborhood. He is currently a life member of The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and involved in many civic, professional, and social organizations in South Texas.
As Barton sees it, “All my small business experience gives me a “world view” because I had to wear many hats—I had to do it all myself—from payroll to taxes, And I am completely familiar with complex legal and financial real estate transactions like closings and contracts. Combine that with my construction experience, and it gives me the ability to walk into any real-estate opportunity and assess it clearly.
